According to Diane Soderholm, the Education Director for the GEL Program, almost every team practiced key leadership skills while building a paper bridge on time, within their materials budget, and to the requirements specified. Now I mentioned before how GEL students did a similar activity in an Engineering Leadership Lab earlier in the school year. So, how did the Open House visitors performance stack up against those of MIT students? Diane said that the visitors, including children, parents, and some real engineers, focused on meeting the time, materials, and requirement specifications, and did not go for the cool factor that trips up some MIT students. This is a lesson Ive learned over and over in the GEL program. Its our instinct to push the boundaries sometimes, and so we forget what the customer asked for in the first place. Leah 11 was helping at the GEL booth on Saturday, and commented on the activitys prime real estate in the Stata Center: We were situated between a levitation station and the robots throwing tennis balls so we couldnt have asked for a better location. The Deliver! station was also gracedâ"not once, but twice!â"with a visit by the ultimate MIT VIP: President Susan Hockfield! After the Open House event, President Hockfield sent a note to program director Ed Crawley, saying I greatly enjoyed the enthusiasm of the Gordon team, which amplified the dozens of other activities that lined Statas student street. I dont know if the visitors or the MIT participants had a better time. Please thank your colleagues for showing the world how MIT works. They [had] decided to forgo a trip to Toscaninis so they could get home even faster as they had decided to make a robotic arm from their pneumatic LEGOs, discussing the design all the way home The arm is already finished We have been home only 45 minutes. Its been 30 years since an event like Under the Dome took place at MIT, but as a recent Tech article suggests, we probably wont have to wait that long for the next one. And They Lived Happily Ever After
Almost every reader expects the same image at the end of any romantic book. Lovey-dovey promises, tender looks, passionate kisses ââ¬â and then they lived happily ever after, despite unpaid bills, routine and unhealthy food habits. There is nothing new about marriages and sweet book endings, though sad endings and divorces do not sound especially unfamiliar as well. Well, why do we love happy endings so much? Some Hope Required Because they reassure us and make us a promise of happiness and better future. If to explain it from the biological point of view: every time we read a story, that ends with a marriage or, at least, with a hint of a marriage possibility, our subconscious gets another proof of the future existence of humankind on Earth. However, if to explain it from the psychological point of view, we often view marriage at the end of the book as a sacred symbol of peace, harmony and serenity. And it is so pure and wonderful that the author doesnt even dare to describe it any further. It is well known that in reality it is quite a rare phenomenon when the marriage indeed becomes a shelter, where the couple can rest from cruelty and injustice of our world. But we want to believe in that rare phenomenon so much, because it is exactly what we need in our lives ââ¬â a relationship, a place, that will make everything seem right, at least for the time being. Professional Point of View Francine Prose, a famous American writer, shared her thoughts about happy endings and book marriage in her article, called ââ¬Å"How Does the Classic Marriage Plot Stand Up in 2014?â⬠. She wrote the following: ââ¬Å"Whenever I hear the phrase ââ¬Å"happily ever after,â⬠I visualize the Don Martin cartoon I first saw in Mad Magazine and have loved since I was a child. The frog has been kissed and transformed into the handsome prince; he and his bride are riding off into the sunset. But in the next frame, a large housefly buzzes past. A long, ribbonlike tongue shoots out of the princeââ¬â¢s mouth and snags the delicious insect morsel. How will the princessââ¬â¢s happiness be affected by her husbandââ¬â¢s unusual dietary preferences? So while the romantic thinks ââ¬Å"happily ever after,â⬠the realist thinks ââ¬Å"housefly.â⬠The Present and the Future Except for theââ¬Å"houseflyâ⬠bitter aftertaste, the problem of the happy endings that feature marriage is how old-fashioned they are. This world is not a place it used to be in previous centuries. It has changed. People have began to value their personal freedom way much more than before. Women have became less dependent in both economic and social meanings. Nowadays marriage is simply not necessary for those, who love each other and want to be with each other ââ¬â they do not need to fear that somebody will judge their behavior, they can simply stay together. Well, perhaps writers should reconsider their concept of happy endings and replace marriage with love and nothing more?

It is the brainchild of BCCI vice-president Lalit Modi and is modelled along the lines of club football in Europe, which is unlike anything cricket has known in the past. The best players from around the world will not play according to their nationality but as per the market forces. Big money involved The sheer big money of the INDIAN PREMIER LEAGUE (IPL) is unprecedented at this level of cricket. The BCCI has already made close to US$ 1. 75 billion solely from the sale of TV rights ($908 million), promotion ($108 million) and franchises (approximately $700 million). Players are expected to earn close to US$1 million for a three-year contract. Itââ¬â¢s an entire cricket economy out there. Top cricketers involved There are 77 names in the competition. MS Dhoni, Ricky Ponting, Adam Gilchrist, Shoaib Akhtar, Jayawardene, Jayasuriya, Yuvraj and Hayden are some of the big names. The process The tournament is scheduled to begin on April 18, 2008 and will last for 44 days, involving 59 matches. The prize money for the league will be around Rs 13 crore (US $3million). Such discovery inspired other conquistadores to go and explore different regions of the American continent. The next place where Spaniards would look for riches was in North America. North America, different from Central or South America, never had riches like gold or other metals, but this fact did not prevent the Spaniards from making the Native North Americans work as slaves in order to find gold. The Spanish treatment given to those native people can be characterized as the worst form of torture. The act of torture, for the Spaniards, was the same thing as playing a sport, the sport of hunting. ââ¬Å"And before they had time to gather together I burnt some five or six little villages, each of about hundred inhabitants â⬠¦ seeing this I ordered the whole fifty to be arrested and their hands cut offâ⬠(Cortes and the Requerimiento 5). Bartolome de Las Casas, a Dominican priest, recognized that his people were being terrible with the Indians, and with the order of the King of Spain, he became a defender of the Indians. Such action mobilized Protestants to create the tale ââ¬Å"Black Legend. â⬠This tale was actually true, however, it would be used later as an excuse for other Europeans justify their colonization. Different than Spain, France and England came to America with intentions that would go beyond finding riches and religion, they were interested in trading and negotiable settlements. ââ¬Å"â⬠¦We are encouraged by the situation and condition of this place, which, if it is cultivated, promises to furnish a great deal for the needs of human lifeâ⬠(Indian Population of New France 16). Samuel de Champlain was the French man who led an expedition to Quebec where he established the New France. His relationship with the Native Indians would support the new colonyââ¬â¢s development. Indians would trade beaver pelts in order to receive European objects. ââ¬Å"Cacagous [a local chief] â⬠¦ show his kindly feelings toward the French â⬠¦ take him a present of hundred beaver skins â⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (Indian Populations of new France 15). The marriage of the English man, John Rolfe, to the ââ¬Å"Kingââ¬â¢s most dear well-beloved daughterâ⬠(Pocahontas and John Smith 32) Pocahontas in 1614, was a remarkable point in the American history. It not only shows how the relationship between the European and the American Indians had changed since Columbusââ¬â¢ first arrival to the American continent, but also shows an agreement of peace between the two populations. This peace, however, lasted until the announcement of Pocahontas death in 1617. Resentments were being accumulated against the English people who were coming to America with their families, bringing diseases, and occupying a huge amount of land. The Indians did not wait too long to attack the English, as a result, 347 English people died. Christopher Columbusââ¬â¢ arrival in the America continent was the beginning of many controversies between the Europeans and Native Americans. Many people say that Columbus was a demon that came to earth to start a revolution. If he was or not, his discovery was important for the development of the ââ¬Å"New Worldâ⬠and remarkable for the worldââ¬â¢s history. Without his discovery of the America, perhaps someone else would discover America decades later, and the year of 2014 would face a different reality. His discovery could be less aggressive, and painful, as it happened when the French discovered Quebec, but the American story would be totally different than it is now, even though many American Indians had to suffer tortures, today they have their own story, and they are proud to say they are the North Americans.
